Giging on the 18th of March in the
Grosery store (NewYork, USA)BIG GIG REVIEW: CMJ 1999 in New York [September 20 1999]
Where Tropical Storm Floyd failed, the Irish succeeded: there was a
flood in New York last week, but of people, not rainwater, At ARLENE'S GROCERY on Saturday 18 September. The Irish Music showcase within the CMJ Music Marathon was a big hit, with a variety of musical styles and attitudes over a hectic 10 hours.
The Frames did a major Dale Carnegie on the crowd. People who had wandered in to see what was billed as 'the best of the Irish
underground' were eagerly looking for music to buy from TheFrames and The Walls after their respective sets
(see our MUSIC LESSONS page for further info on this). The 4 of Us made a welcome return to action, with a set including 'Mary', one of the hits from their first album. The Walls survived a scare of having Joe Wall in hospital immediately prior to leaving Ireland -- he joined the rest of the band the next day, who proceeded to swagger through a driving, groove-centred set that eclipsed their prior US appearances.
Blink had a rousing reception from a devoted group of fans, while Stand proved to be the showmen of the night, throwing shapes recklessly in a crowded room. Surprise of the night was Dublin band Tuan (Too-Awn), whose melodic hard rock was initially met by surprise, but increasingly during their set by an appreciative response, culminating in dancing in front of the stage and whoops of approval after each song. For those who have seen the legendary coldness of New York audiences, this was a major accomplishment.

Your new CD is abolutely amazing. I don't like it; I LOVE IT. The new songs
are brillant, perfect. You succeed in findind the right measure between
power and melodies. I love the 5 songs.
As far as I'm concerned "Saddle time" and "No bullets" are potential huge,
huge hits.
The pressbook was nive as well. I gave it and the new CD to the guy I told
you. He seems to be really interested. He will listen to it and will be in
touch with you to organize something here.
I have sent the other CD to a girl who is working at the French equivalent
of MTV. She has to come in Dublin for holidays and she likes the way your
band is singing. I have done my best to convince her to meet you up there.
She has your contact. Wait and See.
Everything seems to be OK now. But I'm really proud of your band for your
rythm section is great and tight and the new songs are fantastic. John has
done a fucking great job. Fucking well done guys!!!
I'll be in touch with you next week
Take care my friend
See you
Jean.
